We Are Rebels
Technology on Learning

Learning and technology, two things people can now say are constants in our day and age, but is technology suffocating our true ability to learn?

Some people believe that technology is the next step for us to achieve higher learning, and others believe that technology is becoming a barrier. Personally I feel that technology is becoming a barrier to the learning we now know. Some forms of technology can surely be used to “upgrade a persons memory” but at what loss?

Nicholas Carr, author of The Shallows believes that the internet is having a negative effect on our brains. Carr states that studies are showing a decrease in attention spans, reading abilities and others. He mentions that ” the U.S. Department of Education showed twelfth graders’ scores on tests of three different kinds of reading…fell between 1992-2005” implying that the internet is having a negative effect on education.

Have you ever tried to write a paper without clicking around on your Facebook, or watching a couple videos on Youtube? For some this may be an easy task, but for others, Facebook and other technologies have become such a necessity in such persons life, it becomes an addiction.

I feel that these statistics will continue to grow, and the numbers in our favor will continue to get worse and worse, unless people become aware of the negative side of our wonderful inventions. I love my Droid X and my Xbox 360, and I might never be able to stop using them, but now that I am aware of the possible detriments to myself, I will be using them in moderation and maybe you should too? *Hint Hint*
